WEST ADELAIDE BASKETBALL


Junior District (U10 - U18)
District basketball involves the best club teams in South Australia. The West Adelaide Bearcats currently field more than 50 junior teams (boys and girls) in Basketball South Australia’s district competitions in Adelaide, in the under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 age groups.
Bearcats junior teams generally train twice a week and compete weekly against other district clubs and in various metropolitan, country and interstate carnivals throughout the year. There is an expectation that players will have a high level of commitment to the sport, the Club and their own development. See below for information about getting involved.

WHO DO THE BEARCATS PLAY AGAINST?
The 10 first grade district clubs in Adelaide are (home court in brackets): West Adelaide Bearcats (Port Adelaide), Central District (Starplex, Evanston Gardens), Eastern Mavericks (Mt Barker), Forestville (Wayville), North Adelaide (Lightsview), Norwood (ARC Campbelltown), South Adelaide Panthers (Mitchell Park/Marion), Southern Tigers (Morphett Vale), Sturt (Springbank/Pasadena) and Woodville (St Clair).
WHEN DO WE PLAY?
The junior district basketball season usually starts during Term 4 with a 'Preseason' or 'Grading' season, with the 'Championships' season then played during the following Terms 1 and 2.​ Game days will vary depending on the grade and age group.
Teams can also play in various Carnivals, including Australia Day (Starplex), Easter (Norwood), State Championships (May), Interstate Carnivals (June), Bearcats Carnival (July), St Clair Carnival (December), plus other country and interstate carnivals.


WHAT AGE GROUP AM I IN?
For the 2025/26 season (starting October 2025) the age groups for Basketball SA district competitions are:

HOW DO I TRY OUT FOR THE BEARCATS?
U12-18 JUNIOR TRIALS & U10 REGISTRATION
Formal trials for new players in each junior age group are held in August every year - see here for 2025/26.

After the trials players will be graded and allocated to different teams, which they will then begin summer season with. Players can often move between grades during summer season.
If you miss the trials you can simply come along to training – the contacts above will be able to tell you when and where your age group trains. You are always welcome.


HOW DO I GET MY UNIFORM & PLAYING NUMBER?
If you are playing with the Bearcats you will need to buy playing and training uniforms.
DO NOT PURCHASE A UNIFORM UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD YOU ARE DEFINITELY IN A TEAM.
