Junior District (U10 - U18)

The West Adelaide Bearcats currently field around 50 junior teams (boys and girls) in Basketball South Australia’s district competitions in Adelaide, in the under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 age groups. Bearcats junior teams generally train twice a week and compete weekly against other district clubs and in various metropolitan, country and interstate carnivals throughout the year. WHO DO THE BEARCATS PLAY AGAINST?
 

The 10 first grade district clubs in Adelaide are (home court in brackets): West Adelaide Bearcats (Port Adelaide), Central District (Starplex, Evanston Gardens), Eastern Mavericks (Mt Barker), Forestville (Wayville), North Adelaide (Hillcrest), Norwood (Marden), South Adelaide Panthers (Marion), Southern Tigers (Morphett Vale), Sturt (Pasadena) and Woodville (St Clair). The program of junior fixtures and results can be found here: FIXTURES/RESULTS

WHEN DO WE PLAY?

 

In 2021 junior district basketball includes:

  • 'Summer' season – weekly games from February to May

  • Winter ('State') season – weekly games from May to October, with finals in November

  • Game day will vary depending on the grade and age group

  • Carnivals – Australia Day (Starplex), Easter (Norwood), State Championships (May), Interstate Carnivals (June), Mid-Season Bearcats Carnival (July), St Clair Carnival (December), plus other country and interstate carnivals.

WHAT AGE GROUP AM I IN?

 

For the 2021 seasons (starting February 2021) the age groups for Basketball SA district competitions are:

  • Under 10 – Born 2012 or later

  • Under 12 – Born in 2010 or 2011

  • Under 14 – Born in 2008 or 2009

  • Under 16 – Born in 2006 or 2007

  • Under 18 – Born in 2004 or 2005

  • Youth League Men (U21) - Born in 2001, 2002, 2003

  • Youth League Women (U23) - Born in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003

 

HOW DO I TRY OUT FOR THE BEARCATS?
U12-18 JUNIOR TRIALS & U10 REGISTRATION

 

Formal trials for new players in each junior age group are held every year. 

After the trials players will be graded and allocated to different teams, which they will then begin summer season with. Players can often move between grades during summer season.

 

If you miss the trials you can simply come along to training – the contacts below will be able to tell you when and where your age group trains. You are always welcome.

HOW DO I GET MY UNIFORM & PLAYING NUMBER?

 

If you are playing with the Bearcats you will need to buy playing and training uniforms.

 

DO NOT PURCHASE A UNIFORM UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD YOU ARE DEFINITELY IN A TEAM. 

Before purchasing your uniform you will need to be allocated a playing number by the club, which should then be put on the playing uniform. Your playing number will also be needed on your reversible training uniform.
